Cruise to Naples

Mad, bad and dangerous to know—Naples has long endured the slights of fair-weathered travelers who fail to see past the city's shortcomings. Yes, it's noisy. Yes, you might just nearly be run over by a scooter. But it's full of life—Italian life, in all its joyous, live-for-today glory. Most visitors skip the city all together and head for Pompeii nearby, or hop on a ferry for the island of Capri or down the coast to Sorrento. Pompeii is a must-see world site—don't miss it—and we love a lazy Amalfi coast afternoon as much as the next person. But if you've seen Pompeii and you want to be overwhelmed by urban Italy, hit the city's labyrinth of small streets and grand piazzas. The National Museum of Archaeology is exceptional, as is the shopping on Via Chiaia. And the gelato? Almost as good as the pizza, the culinary pride of Naples.
