Cruise to St. John's
First things first: You have to know your St. John's from your Saint John. This St. John's is the capital and largest city of Newfoundland and Labrador at the very eastern end of Canada. (The other one is the capital of New Brunswick, some 1,000 miles to the west.) History rules in St. John's: it's the oldest English-founded city in North America, founded in 1497 and established in 1583. Before then, the nearby waters of the Grand Banks brought fishermen all the way from Europe — notably Spain's Basque region and Portugal — to haul in their catch. Today, walk the hilly streets of downtown St. John's brightly colored buildings today to feel the history, or get out of town and explore the Avalon Peninsula.
