Cruise to Freeport

If you could drive across water — and you can't — you'd hit Freeport an hour after splitting east from Palm Beach, FL. The world-famous Lucaya resort area close to downtown Freeport, the main city on Grand Bahama Island, is a tourist magnet for all the right reasons: White sand, water sports, excellent shopping at the Port Lucaya Marketplace, golf and a casino. Head east, though, along the 96-mile length of Grand Bahama and another, more rustic, world is yours. Check out the Lucayan National Park 20 miles east; at the island's east end, don't miss Bishop's Beach Club in High Rock for cracked conch, barbecued ribs, broiled lobster and a beach you thought only existed in your imagination. Underwater fans: Don't miss swimming with the dolphins at UNEXSO, the Underwater Explorers Society.
