Along with sister ship ms Zaandam and the similarly sized R-class ms Rotterdam and ms Amsterdam, ms Volendam is one of Holland America Line's midsize offerings, which are beloved by fans of the line who don't crave huge cruise ships featuring everything under the sun. Five years into her time at sea, she received the Signature of Excellence enhancements, which helped lure many repeat and first-time guests.
The colorful garden theme of the ship — and the only real differentiation from ms Zaandam — is subtle and is mostly found in floral-patterned fabrics and tapestries throughout the ship. You'll also see an abundance of tropical floral arrangements. Renaissance-style fountains from Italy adorn the ship's hallways, and a colorful sculpture by Luciano Vistosi, which was inspired by kaleidoscopes, graces the three-story atrium. A self-guided iPod tour of the ship highlights the artwork.
