Cruise News: Politics on the High Seas

Feb 25, 2016 | By Zulay Regalado

In this week's Cruise News, Carnival and AT&T unveil virtual cruising, Cunard hosts two well-known political voices onboard Queen Mary 2 and your chance to snag a 7-night cruise to--well, you decide--is almost up.

The world of politics will be sailing the high seas when Queen Mary 2 departs from New York in July. The roundtrip cruise, which will visit Halifax and overnight in Boston for the city's famed Independence Day Celebration, will feature discussions from well-known political voices Mary Matalin and James Carville. Matalin and Carville will be joining guests for a discussion titled "Perspectives on the Modern Presidency" and will also be participating in a Q&A as part of Cunard's award-winning Insights program.

On a lighter (yet still insightful) note:

The 3,690-passenger ship is currently in a 2-week dry dock and being fitted with 5 impressive food and drink options. The line-up includes:

Guy's Burger Joint, a tasty (and free) concept created by Carnival and Food Network personality Guy Fieri which will serve burgers and fries poolside.

Alchemy Bar, a vintage-themed cocktail "pharmacy" where guests can savor unique cocktails and even create some of their own.

Pizzeria el Capitano, an expansion of the cruise line's Cucina del Capitano Italian eatery which will offer five varieties of artisan-style pizza 24 hours a day-- also totally free.

RedFrog Rum Bar, which will offer Caribbean-inspired and rum-based drinks and beers (let's see if any of these deserve a spot on our coveted list of best Caribbean drinks).

BlueIguana Tequila Bar, for the tequila enthusiasts who want to enjoy a variety of tequila-based frozen drinks and beers in an outdoor setting.

The dry dock is set to be completed on March 6. Then, the ship will continue its seven-day schedule from Galveston through April 10 and head to Port Canaveral for year-round Caribbean cruises beginning April 23.

While you wait for these upgrades to make their big debut, you can always tap into virtual reality for your cruising fix:

Carnival Corp. is taking the cruising experience to a whole new level by using virtual reality headsets to appeal to potential cruisers. The cruise line has partnered with AT&T to offer this experience at select AT&T wireless stores across the country. The Samsung Gear VR headsets, which are currently available at 133 AT&T stores in 37 states, uses the power of sight and sound to transport users to a warm and sunny cruise vacation. Users will be treated to scenes from cruise lines such as Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line, as well as beaches and excursions in destinations such as Mexico and Spain.

Plus, not only can they see and hear the delight of embarking on a dream cruise, but they can enter to win a free Carnival cruise of their own upon purchase of a Samsung phone.

While nothing beats the feeling of actually stepping foot on a cruise ship, virtual reality is the next best thing when you're nowhere near a ship, right?
