Alaska Cruise Adventure – Family Series
At Onboard.com we have the opportunity to cruise often (we aren't gloating, we promise - it's just a fact of this wonderful industry we are in).
With an office in Miami Beach, we can practically watch from our office windows as ships sail to and from Port Miami. We are grateful for every sailing and press trip where we get to go see what the cruise lines have to offer their guests (and our readers).
Every now and then we get a bucket list kind of opportunity. An invitation on an expedition cruise or an inaugural of the newest, biggest, fastest ... 'est' cruise ship there is. This summer we have one of those "I can't believe I get to do this for my job" kind of trips. Our friends at Crystal Cruises have invited us to experience one of their Alaska sailings in August aboard Crystal Serenity. Not only do I get to sail on Crystal (my first time) in Alaska (my first time), but I am also taking my family – two young boys and my husband. Typically I sail solo so I can cover every inch of ground on a ship, but we wanted to answer two questions that come up quite regularly.
1 - Can You Take Young Children to Alaska? By the time I get onboard I will have a 3-year old and a 6-year old. There are differing opinions about whether or not they are too young. I'm going to go see for myself. We won't be able to do all of the excursions that we would do if it was just my husband and me; or even if it was just us and the 6-year old. But will it be enough of an amazing experience (I think it will) to justify a family vacation?
2 - Is Crystal Cruises for Young Families? Crystal has a well-deserved reputation for providing an exceptional luxury cruising experience. Best-in-class service, wonderful food options, spacious staterooms and unique shore excursions. And despite having well-regarded children's programming and facilities, Crystal isn't necessarily the first name that comes to mind when you think "family cruising" or "young families." Even with two little ones, will we be able to enjoy most of what Crystal has to offer? Will the kids be sufficiently entertained in the kids' programs? Will we feel comfortable enough with the in-room babysitting services to fully enjoy our experience?
With Alaska season starting in earnest this weekend, we thought it would be fun to share my preparation as I get ready for the cruise. And then I will share my experiences as I have them when we set sail in August.
