When do I need a passport when traveling?

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security requires that all U.S. citizens traveling to and from the United States via air, land or sea carry a valid passport. We recommend that you frequently check the http://www.travel.state.gov website and/or the appropriate consulates for the latest information on visas, immunization, customs and passport requirements for all ports of call and countries on your itinerary.

NOTE: Non-U.S. citizens should check with their appropriate embassy, consulate, immigration office or similar organization to confirm passport requirements for traveling.

Do I need to fill out any immigration forms?

Most cruise lines require that you complete a passenger immigration form via their online check-in. Be sure to complete your form at least 72 hours before your departure date. Are there porters to help me with my luggage at the airport and the cruise terminal? Porters are available at most airports and cruise terminals. These porters make sure your bags arrive in your cabin promptly, so tipping them is customary. A gratuity of $1 per bag is expected and appreciated.

How much luggage can I bring onboard the ship?

The cruise lines have no limitation on how much luggage you bring. However, airlines do set limits. Check with your airline for information on baggage restrictions. Airlines may charge a fee for baggage.

What general documentation and visa information are needed on my cruise?

Since travel documentation requirements can change often, we recommend frequently checking www.travel.state.gov/travel and any appropriate consulates for the latest visa, immunization, customs and passport information for all ports of call and countries on your itinerary. Consider using a reputable visa service to ensure all requirements are met in a timely manner.

When do I need to arrive at the cruise terminal?

We recommend that travelers arrive at the cruise terminal at least two hours prior to the ship’s scheduled departure time. Refer to your cruise itinerary for your cruise departure time. For example, if your cruise departs at 4 p.m., we recommend that you arrive at the cruise terminal to board your ship no later than 2 p.m. Failure to meet this deadline could result in being denied boarding.

Does the cruise line offer transportation to and from the airport and cruise terminal?

Yes, transfers to and from the airport and the cruise terminal are available for an additional charge. Transfers can be purchased through your Onboard cruise advisor (1-855-438-0648). You will need to have your detailed flight information on hand to add transfers. Most cruise lines require transfers be added 14 to 30 days prior to departure.

If I have to fly to a city to take my cruise, what time should I arrive prior to the cruise?

We recommend ensuring your flight arrives no later than four hours before your cruise departure time, if you are not arriving the day prior. When flying home after your cruise, ensure your flight departs no earlier than five hours after your cruise arrives in port. Also, make sure to double check the arrival and departure times of your flights a day before you depart because airlines may change times or dates of the flights.

How much does it cost to park my car at the cruise terminal? Is it safe to leave it there?

Most cruise terminals offer easy and convenient parking for cruise passengers at the pier. These parking areas are usually patrolled by security staff. Parking areas can accommodate handicap parking and, in most cases, recreational vehicles and buses as well. Daily parking rates vary by cruise terminal.

What do I need to know before bringing minors on a cruise?

Different countries have varying rules and requirements for children younger than 18 who are traveling alone or with people other than both parents. You should possess a notarized letter from the parents or legal guardian containing authorization for the child to travel with another person and to be outside the country, the name and a 24-hour contact telephone number of parents or guardians and the destination and length of time the child will be away. Adoptive parents, legal guardians or parents who are separated or divorced are advised to keep legal and other relevant documents available in order to clarify custody rights. This information can vary and we recommend checking with your Onboard cruise advisor to discuss the specific limitations and rules of your cruise line.

Are there travel limitations during pregnancy?

Each cruise line has its own policies regarding travel during pregnancy. We highly recommend visiting your cruise line website for specific information about travel limitations. Remember, failure to comply with cruise line rules could result in being denied boarding.

Do cruise ships allow strollers onboard?

All cruise lines allow you to bring your own stroller, which is highly recommended. Very few cruise lines have stroller rentals on ships. If you need a stroller during your cruise, you should plan on bringing your own.

Do they have wheelchairs onboard?

Wheelchairs are only available to help passengers on and off the cruise ship during embarkation and disembarkation. Generally, they are not available for use throughout your cruise. Some cruise lines, like Holland America Line, work with companies you may contact directly to arrange a wheelchair rental for a week. If you or a family member requires a wheelchair during the entire cruise, you should bring your own or contact your cruise line directly.

Do I need travel insurance for my cruise trip?

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect the financial investment in your vacation. We suggest taking out your insurance at the time you book your cruise, ensuring coverage from the point you pay a deposit to the point you arrive home.

How do I make my final payment?

On the final payment due date, your final payment will automatically be charged to the original credit card that you used to make your deposit on the final payment due date.

NOTE: The final payment due date can be found on your confirmation document and your receipt under “Balance Due Date.”

Contact your Onboard cruise advisor if you'd like to make partial payments and/or make any changes to the credit card information that will be used for the final payment.

NOTE: Any changes to the credit card information must be made prior to the final payment due date.

*Check the expiration date of the credit card on file to ensure that it will be valid at the time that your final payment is due.

NOTE: Credit cards that are invalid at the time of final payment, may result in a delay in payment processing and can lead to cancellation of your cruise due to non-payment. Can friends and family book through my Onboard.com cruise advisor? Friends and family may book through your Onboard.com cruise advisor with your permission. It is important that you let your Onboard.com cruise advisor know of all friends and family members traveling with you to ensure that you are seated together at dinner.

Do I have to tip onboard?

Some cruise lines include gratuities in the cruise fare. If they are not included, it is customary to tip staff at the end of the cruise to thank them for the excellent service onboard. While not compulsory, it is a nice gesture for the staff. These tips can usually be added to your onboard account.

I get seasick, is there anything that will help me with this?

Larger cruise lines have stabilizers that help limit the motion of a cruise ship in the ocean. You might want to meet with your physician before your trip and perhaps take seasickness medication with you. If you do experience motion sickness during your cruise, the onboard doctor may be able to assist.

Can I stay in touch with what’s going on back home?

Most ships make it easy to stay in touch, usually offering Internet access and a daily newsletter with news, select stock quotes and sports scores. Staterooms on modern cruise ships are typically equipped with satellite televisions and, in some cases, in-room Internet connections. While most ships have telephones in staterooms, you can also make calls to your friends and family on shore through the ship's radio operator while at sea, and you can make phone calls from most ports. In addition, many ships have fax capabilities.

What do I wear onboard?

This depends on the cruise line and class of ship. During the day, casual clothing is suitable. From late afternoon to evening, smart casual clothing is acceptable. There may also be a formal night or themed events during your cruise, so be sure to check the cruise line website.

If I need medication onboard, can I take it with me?

All medical conditions and medication needs should be communicated when booking the trip. It is also recommended to take a few extra days' supply, in case of any unforeseen delays. There is also a doctor onboard if medical attention is needed.

Is there a safe in my stateroom?

All modern cruise ships have a safe in each stateroom. They are typically electronically opened and closed with either a password or your room key. Older ships may not have safes in the staterooms, but you may be able to arrange to leave valuables at the purser's desk.

Do I need to pack a hairdryer, razor or iron? Do I need an adapter?

Most modern cruise lines have hairdryers in the staterooms. Electric razors may be brought with you, as staterooms are equipped with 110 volts AC.

Many ships do not allow you to bring irons onboard. However, laundry facilities on cruise ships typically include irons and ironing boards as well as dry cleaning and laundry services.

Do I need to bring a tuxedo?

Unless you want to wear one, or are traveling on a luxury or premium cruise line, a tuxedo is not necessary. Many major cruise lines have a loyal client base of guests who enjoy the tradition of dressing up on formal nights. A dark suit is acceptable on most cruise lines for formal night, though you would not be out of place in a tuxedo. Some cruise lines adopt a more resort-casual atmosphere and tuxedos are not required or expected. However, a sport coat and tie is recommended just in case there is an occasion to use it.
